Paroled sex offender found guilty of sexually assaulting teens

A Torrance jury took just 2 hours to find paroled sex offender James Marcus Russell, 25, guilty of three counts of kidnapping with the intent to commit sodomy, two counts of forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, attempted sodomy, forcible sodomy and robbery.

Russell was paroled from prison in July 2002 after serving 10 months of a 16-month prison sentence for sodomizing a child and robbery convictions.

Here are the 4 attacks that we know of:

  • July 11, 2004. He followed two boys off a Metro Green Line train and out of the station in Redondo Beach to where they skateboarded in a nearby parking lot. He put a 15-year-old boy in a choke hold and ordered his 17-year-old friend to perform sex acts on Russell and the younger teen.
  • July 26, 2004. A Long Beach bus stop, where he choked a 17-year-old boy and told his friend to board the bus or he would kill the boy. Russell forced the boy to walk down the street and "act like gay lovers" before the boy was able to slip away.
  • Aug. 12, 2004. Russell grabbed a 17-year-old boy as he locked his garage in a San Pedro alley. Russell took the boy's wallet, then forced him into his car and ordered him to put a sweatshirt over his head. That boy was able to escape.
  • Aug. 12, 2004. Only hours later in Los Angeles when Russell asked a 15-year-old boy for help pushing his car. Russell put the boy into a choke hold and forced him into a car. He drove the boy to a secluded alley, where he repeatedly sexually assaulted him.
Redondo Beach police Detective Alan Beck said they were already looking for Russell after he was linked to the first crime through DNA evidence he left at the scene in the Redondo Beach assault.

Hold on. A paroled sex offender committed more sexual offenses? Gee, we never saw that one coming.

What will the pundits say? We are always told that kids are attacked by people they know, people close to them, not 'strangers'. Well James Marcus Russell did not know his victims and neither did David Allyn Dokich.

Russell's attorney, Austin Dove, argued to the jury that his client was gay and misunderstood. The sexual acts, Dove said, were consensual.

You can see the bind Russell's attorney was in. Multiple victims all telling the same story and that darn DNA stuff. So Austin Dove went right to line 1, page 1 of Rape Defense for Dummies: It was consensual!

Russell faces 50 years to life behind bars when he returns to court Nov. 15 for sentencing.
