PE Opinion: Thwarting Predators

As the Legislature plays political games with bills aimed at cracking down on high-risk sex offenders, citizens are taking action. A petition is circulating to put before the voters a law legislators adamantly refuse to pass.

If voters approve, the initiative will increase sentences for a wide range of sexual offenses, require lifetime satellite monitoring of paroled high-risk predators, and ban registered offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or park.

Here is what readers can do to sign the petition and support the measure.

Visit the Web site of Southern Californians for Jessica's Law ( www.jessicaslaw.com) or call (858) 456-7445 and request a petition. Backers need about 375,000 signatures by the end of February to get the measure on November's ballot.

Jessica's Law is named after Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Florida girl who was kidnapped, raped and buried alive in February by a known sexual predator wanted for multiple parole violations.

We'd guess that most Californians are unwilling to put themselves or their children at risk by giving known sexual predators the benefit of a political stalemate. Whether passed by the people's elected representatives or by the people themselves, California needs Jessica's Law.
